One Great Hour of Sharing

75thAnniversarylogo-200Sunday, March 6, 2016 is designated as the One Great Hour of Sharing Sunday. This is when we receive an offering to cover the administrative costs of the United Methodist Committee on Relief. We are asked to give generously as this offering provides the means for 100% of subsequent gifts to go towards disaster relief such as assisting those affected by the recent tornadoes in Virginia.

Following this offering on Sunday, we ask you to designate your gifts to Advance Mission Special #5037 to continue offering a faithful response to people in their hour of need. Please read Bishop Young Jin Cho’s letter to us concerning the recent, tragic storms. I knew Mr. Harris (the person killed by the tornado near Appomattox) since Evergreen is on the other end of the charge where I grew up and I know his family and others like them will be blessed and encouraged by your good giving.

A Time Set Apart for Prayer and Vision

James1.5This Saturday morning at Laurel Hill will be a time set apart for prayer and pursuing the vision of ministry God has for us. We’ll start with breakfast at 8:00 AM. Thanks to Doug Singlemann and other men of God for preparing this meal for us before we meet together. We will begin with a time of devotion and worship at 8:45 AM, preparing our hearts to hear from God and each other and then formally begin our focused time at 9:00 AM.

This is more than planning our calendar. This is a time of agreed upon focus and mission where we mark our year with the ministries we believe help us fulfill God’s holy purposes for Laurel Hill within the kingdom and within our community.

At 11:45 AM, we will share in Holy Communion to conclude this sacred time.

The Advent of Jesus

Advent-2015-PIN_focusThe song said, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year!”  And the song is right. Why is this the most wonderful time? Because Love is revealed from heaven. Salvation has come. God is with us – Emmanuel!  We can open the pages of the book and go to Bethlehem and see this One who is born King of the Jews and Lord of the Nations.

Best of all, we can worship Him! We can humble ourselves before Him, adore Him, set our hearts to follow Him and let His goodness and mercy follow us all the rest of our days.

Come, let us adore Christ the Lord together. Don’t miss a single opportunity this Advent season presents. Here is our Calendar.12.15 and our Newsletter12.15.

It’s Going to Be a Great Day

harpsTomorrow, Laurel Hill welcomes the American Youth Harp Ensemble to worship with us, play for us, and share lunch with us.  They will be setting up early so make them feel welcome to Laurel Hill UMC. They will play for us during the 11:00 AM service, share lunch with us, then at 1:15 PM perform a concert for us. We are set to be blessed.

I will see you there. Bring a little extra for lunch and plan to stay for the wonderful music.

Our early service (8:45 AM) will be meeting downstairs to accomodate the Youth from the Harp Ensemble. Also, the Missions and Ministries Committee will have a very brief meeting immediately following the 11:00 AM worship, prior to lunch.

See the earlier post from today about our Missios Yard Sale. . For these and many reasons I ask you to pray for the ministry of the Friends of Barnabas Foundation. If you are wondering how you should pray, pray for the Pediatric Cardiac Program in Honduras. Pray for our Mission Team’s preparation and effectiveness. Set aside a few minutes of your time each day from now until we have our mission yard sale and pray specifically for this ministry. Let the front page of the Foundation’s September newsletter help you pray.
